MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, on Oct. 1-3 to compete in the annual Queen City Classic.
The Mountaineers will be competing against five teams including Xavier, Northern Kentucky, Boise State, Wright State and BIG EAST foe Cincinnati.
“I don't have any result-oriented expectations. I just want them to continue to work on doing the right things in the tournament,” says coach Tina Samara. “Right now, I do not think it’s about results as much as it is about improving.”
Representing the Mountaineers in the singles competition will be sophomore Emily Mathis and freshman Melis Tanik (flight ‘A’), senior Ashley Pilsbury and junior Veronica Cardenas (flight ‘B’), sophomore Liv Pettersson (flight ‘C’) and junior Catie Wickline and freshman Anna Rodionova (flight ‘D’).
Mathis and Tanik will also be flight ‘A’ partners in the doubles competition, as they pair up for the first time this season. The flight ‘B’ pair of Pilsbury and Pettersson will also represent WVU in doubles action.
“So far I am pleased with the effort that the team is putting in, but we are continuing to work hard, cut down on unforced errors and make good choices,” adds Samara. “Hopefully we can get our injured players healthy soon and continue to prepare for the dual match season.”
The Mountaineers finished last year’s Queen City Classic with a title in the doubles competition. Mathis and Cardenas captured three-straight wins against Cincinnati, Toledo and Ball State in flight ‘B’. The duo won the title with an 8-4 victory in the finals.
Mathis also led the Mountaineers in singles competition, making it to the finals of the flight ‘A’ consolation bracket, but was defeated in a 6-2, 7-6 match against Michigan State’s Lindsey Lonergan.
