FAIRFAX, Va. – Despite playing a tough match, the West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Charlotte this evening in its first match of the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason.
The 49ers (2-2) defeated the Mountaineers (4-1) in a 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-17) match.
Hard serving and good defense kept Charlotte in the lead for most of the first set, until a kill from junior outside hitter Serinna Russo jump-started a 6-0 run for the Mountaineers to tie the score at 17. WVU fought to momentarily take the lead, but the 49ers refused to fall as they took set one after a kill from senior Kara Raker.
Set two started in the Mountaineers’ favor after consecutive kills from senior Lauren Evans and juniors Kylie Armbruster, Michelle Kopecky and Russo put WVU up 5-3. However, the 49ers once again fought back as sophomore Bianca Rouse posted five kills and two blocks to bring her team back for the victory.
Kopecky posted three kills and a service ace to push her team to an 8-6 lead over Charlotte, to give the Mountaineers the advantage at the beginning of set three. WVU played tough in the set, but the 49ers came out on top with 7.5 blocks in set three alone, to win the match.
Kopecky led the Mountaineers today with 10 kills, while senior libero Bonnie West recorded 13 digs.
WVU returns to action tomorrow with a match against George Mason at 1 p.m., followed by a match against Army at 5 p.m.
