MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Abby Norman posted 16 kills with a .500 hitting average to lead the West Virginia University volleyball team in its first BIG EAST win of the season this afternoon over DePaul in Chicago, Ill.
WVU is now 11-7, 1-1 BIG EAST after defeating DePaul (1-13, 0-2) in a 3-0 (33-31, 25-21, 25-16) match.
"We got back into an offensive rhythm today, which was really nice to see" coach Jill Kramer said. "Kari (Post) did a great job of following our game plan and distributing the ball as such.
“I also thought we did a great job on team defense. Lauren Evans and Abby Norman did a good job producing in the middle on offense and defense. We are now looking forward to prepping for Seton Hall and Rutgers next weekend.”
The Mountaineers fought hard in the first set as Norman and senior Lauren Evans and junior Michelle Kopecky posted six kills apiece. Down 23-24, Norman and Kopecky gave WVU the advantage with two-straight kills. However, with a win by two rule, the Blue Demons came back with a kill of their own from Chelsea Kirkpatrick to tie the match at 25. The two teams continued to battle until Kopecky, a native of Schaumburg, Ill., posted a service ace to win the set.
WVU carried that momentum into the second set as they jumped to a quick 12-7 lead after back-to-back kills from Norman. The Blue Demons temporarily came back to within one, but WVU sealed the set with a kill from junior Kylie Armbruster.
A block from Norman and junior Serinna Russo started set three for WVU, as the Mountaineers went on to post 16 kills to win the set and the match.
Russo also had a good match with nine kills and 19 digs, while senior libero Bonnie West posted 23 digs and Evans recorded 15 kills.
As a team, WVU finished with a .277 hitting percentage and 58 kills.
The Mountaineers continue BIG EAST action next weekend when they travel to South Orange, N.J., for a 2 p.m. match with Seton Hall.
