Women's Tennis: WVU Concludes Weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team completed the Eastern Championships today, with two singles competitors making it to the finals.
Sophomore Emily Mathis and freshman Melis Tanik made it to the finals of their respective flights, while junior Veronica Cardenas made it to the flight ’C’ semi-finals before losing 6-1, 6-2 to Amherst’s Gabby Delvin.
“I think we did pretty well this weekend having two girls make it to the finals out of the four brackets we were in,” says coach Tina Samara. “They all fought hard and with the right work, I think we’re going to do really well this year.”
After winning a tough third-set tiebreaker against FDU’s Julia Prantl in the semi-finals, Mathis made it to the flight ‘B’ finals, where she fell short to UMASS’s Julia Comas in a 6-3, 6-4 match.
Tanik made it to the flight ‘D’ finals after winning 6-2, 6-0 against Pitt’s Adela Aprodu in the quarter-finals and defeating Amherst’s Lauren Slutsky, 7-6(3), 6-3, in the semi-finals. In a hard-fought match in the finals, Tanik was defeated 7-5, 6-0 by UMASS’s Jessica Podlofsky.
In doubles action, junior Catie Wickline and freshman Anna Rodionova captured back to back wins over Providence’s Courtney Fuller and Christina Troy (8-2) and Fordham’s Monika Chao and Bethany Boyle (8-3), but the pair was defeated in the consolation finals.
“It was good for me to see them play and I saw a lot of good things done by them this weekend,” adds Samara. “We do have a lot that we need to go back and work on, but I was impressed overall with the talent we have.”
The Mountaineers will continue action on Oct. 1, as they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to compete in the Queen City Classic.
