MILWAUKEE, Wis. – An early goal from Bri Rodriguez was not enough as the West Virginia women’s soccer team surrendered a 1-0 lead to Marquette, falling 2-1 Thursday night at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis.
“We have to figure out a way to close out these games after we take the lead,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We are constantly battling obstacles and it’s very frustrating for everyone involved right now.”
Rodriguez put the Mountaineers on top, 1-0, in the ninth minute as she volleyed a ball past MU goalkeeper Natalie Kulla from 14 yards out. Forwards Blake Miller headed a ball to Megan Mischler who flicked it back into the middle for Rodriguez’s one-timer. The goal was Rodriguez’s third of the season with Miller and Mischler each earning an assist.
Marquette found the back of the net at the 21:07 mark on a goal from forward Ashley Bares. Bares won a ball deep in the box, turned and sent a shot across the goal and into the left side netting to knot the score at 1-1.
MU’s Maegan Kelly completed the first half scoring with a game-winner in the 41st minute. The Golden Eagle forward finished a through ball up the middle on a pass from Julia Victor.
Late in the second half midfielder Ashtin Larkin appeared to score her first goal of the season but WVU was called for a foul to waive off the scoring opportunity.
Trailing 2-1 at the half, the Mountaineers came out strong after intermission. The WVU offense was dangerous, sending several balls across the mouth of the goal but with no result.
The Mountaineer offense generated eight shots, led by Rodriguez’s three attempts. MU finished with 19 shots on the night, several from long range.
WVU forward Blake Miller took two shots, including a scoring chance in the 28th minute. She took the ball down field in transition, cut one defender and slotted a ball just wide of the left post.
Marquette was also whistled for 14 fouls and one yellow card in a physical contest.
West Virginia drops to 4-4-0 (0-1-0 BIG EAST) while Marquette improves to 5-3-2 (2-0-0 BIG EAST). The contest was also the conference opener for WVU.
The Mountaineers return to action with a BIG EAST home match versus USF on Sunday, Sept. 26. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
