MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team will open BIG EAST play this week with a match against DePaul on Friday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
“It is more so playing who we played that has helped us come into conference play,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “We’ve played a good schedule; we survived the pretty rigorous first portion of our non-conference schedule and I think we’re prepared for BIG EAST play.”
The Mountaineers (4-2) are currently riding a three-game win streak that includes wins over Old Dominion, Cal State Fullerton and James Madison. Sophomore Peabo Doue currently leads the team with four goals and two assists, while sophomore Uwem Etuk has registered a team-high four assists. Five different WVU players have scored goals.
“Obviously the NCAA implications go without having to be said,” LeBlanc commented. “When you play good teams that are tournament quality teams and you get great results like we have, it puts us in a better position to be an at-large if we don’t win the conference tournament.”
WVU has also used strong performances from their backline with sophomore Eric Schoenle and junior Uzi Tayou in the middle and juniors Raymon Gaddis and Ruben Garrido playing on the outside. Garrido has done an admirable job in filling in for senior Dan Hagey, who has been out with injury.
DePaul comes into the game with a 3-3-1 mark and defeated Drake, 2-0, its last time out. Alex Mangan leads the team with four goals and one assist. Three of his goals have come in the form of gamewinners. Willy Lara leads the team with three assists. In net is Joe Ferrari who has played all seven games registering a 1.11 goals-against average and collecting 25 saves with two shutouts.
“They’re an excellent team and we’ve been fortunate in our results with DePaul since I’ve been here, but with that being said they’re a very good soccer team,” LeBlanc said. “In my opinion, they’ll be the best soccer team we have played to date, so it’s going to open up a totally different spectrum for us.”
WVU is 5-0 all-time against DePaul, including a 2-1 victory last season in Morgantown. After the Blue Demons took the early 1-0 lead, Travis Pittman scored the game-tying goal in the 82nd minute, followed by a game-winner from Gift Maworere in the 94th minute.
