MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team is set to begin its BIG EAST competition this weekend with road trips to Notre Dame and DePaul.
The Mountaineers will face the Irish in a 4 p.m. match on Friday, Sept. 24, and compete at DePaul on Sunday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m.
WVU is 10-5 this season, after going 3-2 last week. The Mountaineers first defeated Marshall, 3-0, in a mid-week match, marking the first time WVU has defeated the Herd since 2001. WVU then traveled to Fullerton, Calif., where it defeated Liberty (3-1) and Yale (3-0), before falling to Penn (0-3) and tournament host Cal State Fullerton (3-0).
Senior Lauren Evans was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts at the Fullerton Classic. The Canyon Lake, Calif., native was also honored with BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll accolades after finishing the weekend with 52 kills, with a .311 hitting percentage, and 18 total blocks, including 14 kills on a .591 hitting clip in the match against Penn.
Senior libero Bonnie West also had a good weekend, as she broke the school record for most career digs in the match against Cal State Fullerton. The previous record was held by Michelle Domas (1,630) who graduated in 1991. West entered this season at No. 3 behind Domas and Aurora Ebert-Santos (1,561). She finished the weekend with 87 digs, including a season-high 25 against Yale. For her career, West now owns 1,690 digs.
The Irish are now 7-5 on the season after falling to Dayton in a 3-0 match last weekend at the Notre Dame Invitational. Despite the loss, junior Kristen Dealy was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 3.64 kills and .436 digs per set.
Overall, the Irish own a 14-3 series advantage against the Mountaineers after they won 3-0 last season in Morgantown.
DePaul fell to Northern Illinois on Tuesday, moving the Blue Demons to 1-12 on the season. Senior Kate Letcher leads the team in kills with 110 this year. In the loss to the Huskies, Letcher also posted a team-high .429 hitting percentage.
