Women’s Basketball: Another Top 10 Ranking

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - In addition to the Sporting News No. 9 preseason ranking, the West Virginia University women’s basketball team was tabbed No. 9 nationally again as Athlon Sports named the Mountaineers No. 9 in its preseason top 25 poll.
Taking the top spot was BIG EAST foe Connecticut. Stanford, Tennessee, Baylor, Ohio State, Xavier, Texas A&M and Duke landed spots two through eight. Behind West Virginia, Maryland was tabbed No. 10, with Kentucky, Georgetown, UCLA, Notre Dame, St. John’s, Oklahoma, Bowling Green, Iowa State, Florida State and Georgia rounding out the top 20. Texas, Virginia, Vanderbilt, LSU and Nebraska made up the final five teams to earn the preseason ranking.
Of the top 25 listed in the Sporting News and Athlon Sports polls, eight of the Mountaineers’ 2010-11 opponents received preseason rankings. In addition to those listed above, Sporting News listed TCU No. 23 and Rutgers No. 25 in its poll. West Virginia takes on preseason-ranked TCU, Virginia and Iowa State all as a part of the Paradise Jam preseason tournament held in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. The other opponents who earned a preseason ranking will be seen during the BIG EAST portion of the schedule.
Preseason competition open to the public will tip off with the Mountaineer Madness, Friday, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m., but West Virginia’s official practice schedule opens Oct. 5.
