FULLERTON, Calif. – In its last day of competition at the Fullerton Classic, the West Virginia University volleyball team went 1-1 with a win over Yale and a loss to Penn.
“This was a great tournament for us to compete in,” coach Jill Kramer says. “We have a lot of players on the team from California and we always do our best to return to our players home town sometime before they graduate. Playing four teams over two days helped prep us for conference play next weekend.”
The Mountaineers are now 10-5 on the season after defeating Yale in a 3-1 (27-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-20) match, before falling to Penn in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-21) match.
Senior Lauren Evans was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts over the weekend. The Canyon Lake, Calif., native, led the team with 46 kills on a .327 hitting clip and 16 total blocks.
The Mountaineers started the day with an exciting set one against Yale. With 16 kills and three team blocks, WVU came back from behind to defeat the Bulldogs after a kill from junior Kylie Armbruster.
The Bulldogs came back strong in set two as they jumped to a 9-17 lead. WVU made a late-set run after kills from junior Michelle Kopecky and sophomore Whitney Lee, but despite their best efforts fell to Yale.
WVU regained its focus in the third set as it went on a 5-0 run with the serving of junior Serinna Russo and a block from Kopecky for a 14-12 lead. Two-straight kills from Evans then gave the Mountaineers some energy as they ended the set after junior Kari Post dumped the ball over the net.
Tied at 13 in the fourth set, Kopecky posted a kill, while Armbruster followed with two of her own to give WVU the advantage. The Mountaineers went on to win the set as they posted 18 team kills.
Russo posted her sixth double-double of the season with 11 kills and a season-high 36 digs, while Post also recorded a double-double with 52 assists and 20 digs.
Kopecky also played well with 16 kills and 15 digs.
In their second match of the day, the Mountaineers started with a good lead over Penn in the first set. However, the Quakers put together a 9-0 run to come back and win the set.
Penn carried that momentum through second and third sets as they went on to win the match.
Despite the loss, Evans led the team with 14 kills and a .591 hitting clip, while West posted 25 digs.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sept. 24 with their first BIG EAST road match of the season against Notre Dame at 4 p.m.
