FULLERTON, Calif. – Despite losing to Cal State Fullerton this evening, senior Bonnie West led the Mountaineers as she became WVU’s all-time leader for digs.
The Wildomar, Calif., native posted 19 digs tonight giving her 1,642 for her career, in front of friends and family, to pass Michelle Domas for the No. 1 spot.
“I am really proud of Bonnie for reaching this milestone,” coach Jill Kramer says. “ She led our team in digs this evening and did a great job of coordinating our defensive effort against a very good Fullerton team.
“We learned a lot about our team tonight and improved our play in the third set. We fought really hard and made some big plays at crucial times just not enough of them. We are looking forward to getting back in the gym tomorrow with Yale and Penn.”
The Titans (8-3) defeated the Mountaineers (9-4) in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 26-24) match.
Cal State Fullerton came out strong in set one with 18 kills, as Torrie Brown posted eight of them. The Mountaineers made several attempts to come back, but fell as Brown ended the set with a kill.
Cal State Fullerton carried that momentum into the second set as they continued to dominate at the net. Down 17-7, junior Serinna Russo posted a kill and followed up with a block to give the Mountaineers some energy. However, the Titans returned with another strong showing to win the set.
WVU came back in set three as a block from senior Lauren Evans sent the Mountaineers on a 4-0 run for an 8-6 lead. The Titans returned to take the lead, as kills from junior Michelle Kopecky and Evans kept WVU in the set. Tied at 22, WVU fought hard to maintain the lead, but in the end fell to the Titans.
Junior setter Kari Post recorded a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs, while junior Michelle Kopecky posted 10 kills.
WVU will complete action at the Fullerton Classic with matches against Yale and Penn tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. EST, respectively.
