Women's Basketball: WVU 9th in Preseason Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – According to the most recent Sporting News publication, the West Virginia University women’s basketball team was tabbed No. 9 nationally in the preseason top 25 poll, with BIG EAST teams making up 20 percent of the teams chosen.
Taking the top spot was BIG EAST foe Connecticut. In addition to the Mountaineers, Baylor, Stanford, Xavier, Tennessee, Duke, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Oklahoma rounded out the top 10. Other BIG EAST opponents to land spots in the top 25 include Georgetown (13), St. John’s (14) and Rutgers (25).
West Virginia returns all five starters from last season when the Mountaineers set a school record for most wins in a season (29), finished second in the BIG EAST regular season with 13 victories, was the BIG EAST Championship runner-up for the second time in program history and advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Second Round for the third time in the last four years.
In both major polls, WVU reached as high as No. 7, marking its highest-ever ranking in school history and first time in the top 10. The Mountaineers also set a school record for most home victories (17) in the program’s second undefeated home season.
Preseason competition will tip off with the Mountaineer Madness, Friday, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. The WVU women’s basketball 2010-11 schedule will be released later this month.
