Volleyball: WVU Travels to California

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In its last tournament of the season, the West Virginia University volleyball team travels to Fullerton, Calif., on Sept. 17-18, for the Fullerton Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
The Mountaineers are set to face Liberty at 2:30 p.m. and Cal State Fullerton at 10 p.m. on Friday, and Yale and Penn at 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday. All times are EST.
WVU stands 8-3 this season after defeating Marshall, 3-0, on Tuesday at the WVU Coliseum and returning the Golden Ball back to Morgantown.
Junior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky led the team against the Herd with 12 kills, while junior Serinna Russo added seven kills and 16 digs.
Senior libero Bonnie West moved closer to the school record for all-time digs, as she recorded 15 against the Herd. West is only 27 digs away from passing Michelle Domas (1,630) for the No. 1 spot.
Liberty is also coming off a Tuesday night win after defeating James Madison in a 3-1 match to improve its season record to 7-3. Junior Kelly Haseman led the team in digs with a season-high 30, while Kendle Rollins and Karyl Bacon both reached double-figure kills with 11 and 10, respectively.
Cal State Fullerton is 6-3 this season after finishing 2-1 at the UNLV Invitational last weekend. In their last match of the tournament, the Titans’ Torrie Brown posted 13 kills to lead her team to its fifth sweep in the last six matches.
Yale has only lost one match this season, a 3-1 battle with BIG EAST foe Georgetown last weekend. The Bulldogs are led by Kelly Ozurovich, who leads the nation in digs with a 6.15 set average, while Bridget Hearst leads the team with 76 kills.
Penn moved to 3-3 this season with a 1-2 showing at the Terrapin Invitational last weekend. The Quakers fell to Maryland and Tulane, and then swept Fairfield, 3-0. Julia Swanson aided Penn in the win with 15 kills.
The Mountaineers are 8-6 against this weekend’s field. They are 4-5 all-time against the Flames after defeating them 3-0 in 2002, and 1-0 against the Titans. WVU is also 1-1 against Yale and Penn.
