Week 1 National RankingsMORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Following a solid third-place finish at the BIG EAST Preview over the weekend, the West Virginia University cross country team finds itself ranked No. 17 in the country.
The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches of America released its first rankings of the season after two weeks of competition throughout the country.
“The national scene will be much clearer to evaluate over the next three weeks,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “In reality, this ranking is nothing more than an extended preseason ranking.”
WVU was ranked No. 15 two weeks ago in the USTFCCCA preseason national polls. The Mountaineers are preceded by BIG EAST foes No. 1 Villanova, No. 7 Georgetown, No. 10 Syracuse, No. 14 Providence, and No. 15 Notre Dame.
Florida State, Washington, Oregon and Texas Tech round out the top five schools in the national rankings.
“What this does show is the depth of the Big East Conference,” Cleary says. “To be ranked No. 17 in the country and be the sixth team in the league in the standings is a tremendous testament to the power of our conference.”
Sophomore transfer Kaitlyn Gillespie came in first place overall out of 76 runners at the BIG EAST Preview ahead of Syracuse’s Sarah Pagano. Senior Maria Dalzot also had a strong finish at No. 16 to arrive second for the team.
The Mountaineers will next compete at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Oct. 1, in South Bend, Ind.
