MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer player Eric Schoenle has been named athlete of the week for his efforts this past weekend at the Stihl Soccer Classic hosted by Old Dominion.

A sophomore captain from Yardley, Pa., Schoenle score the game-winning goal in the 85th minute on Sunday’s game against Old Dominion to secure a 2-1 victory. Schoenle headed in the goal off of Travis Pittman’s corner kick, for his first-career goal. Schoenle was also named to the Stihl Soccer Classic all-tournament team. This was the second time Schoenle has been on an all-tournament team this season.

Apart from his offensive contribution, Schoenle played a solid 90 minutes in both games against William & Mary and Old Dominion.

This Week in Cross Country
The West Virginia University cross country team will have a few weeks to rest and practice in preparation for the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 1, in South Bend, Ind.

Last Week in Cross Country
The No. 15-ranked Mountaineers took third place at the BIG EAST Preview race in Syracuse, N.Y., this past weekend ... the Mountaineers finished with 85 points, with No. 9 Syracuse landing in first place with 31 points and Connecticut in second with 47 points ... sophomore-transfer Kaitlyn Gillespie came in first place overall in the field of 76 runners to lead the team, beating Syracuse’s Sarah Pagano by 20 seconds to the finish line.

As WVU coach Sean Cleary is trying to solidify the roster, several Mountaineers made their first appearances of the 2010 season, including senior Maria Dalzot, and juniors Sarah-Anne Brault and Stephanie Caruso ... Dalzot came in 16th place overall at the BIG EAST Preview, second best for the team, while sophomores Hallie Portner and Aubrey Moskal had solid finishes after performing well a week earlier at the WVU Invitational.

This Week in Men’s Soccer
The Mountaineers are set to host the BIG EAST Partner Weekend at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … the Mountaineers will face Cal-State Fullerton on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. … WVU will then take on James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 3:30 p.m.

Last Week in Men’s Soccer
The Mountaineers registered a 1-1-0 mark this past week in the Stihl Soccer Classic in Norfolk, Va. … on Sept. 10, WVU lost to William & Mary, 2-1 … West Virginia got the lone goal from Peabo Doue, his first of the season … On Sunday against Old Dominion, WVU struck first again with Franck Tayou netting his second of the season … after giving up the tying goal with about 20 minutes remaining in the half, Eric Schoenle scored his first career goal and the game-winning goal to give the Mountaineers the lead and ultimately the victory with only five minutes left.

West Virginia finished the tournament in second place … Eric Schoenle, Raymon Gaddis and Franck Tayou were all named to the all-tournament team … WVU’s previous four opponents now combine for 13-2 overall record, with the only two losses coming to WVU.

The Mountaineers return to action at home with their BIG EAST opener on Thursday, Sept. 16, against Pitt at 7 p.m. … WVU then welcomes ACC foe Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. … the match versus UVA is also ‘Dollar Day’ with admission and select concessions available for one dollar each.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer
A one-goal lead was not enough as the West Virginia women’s soccer team allowed two goals in the final eight minutes, falling 2-1 at Miami, at the 2010 Hurricane Cup … UM forward Brittney Steinbruch netted the game-winner in the 88th minute, the second of two goals in a seven-minute span … the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute on a bending shot from forward Blake Miller … WVU used a strong effort in the corner kick game to post a 4-0 victory over Florida Atlantic in game two of the Hurricane Cup … West Virginia netted three goals off corner kicks and were strong defensively to post their second shutout of the season … WVU’s first goal came when defender Drea Barklage headed home the game’s first score from six yards out off a corner … a persistent Mountaineer offense came out strong in the second half and doubled its score in the 51st minute off the foot of Miller … defenders Mallory Smith and Meghan Lewis added the final two goals off corners for WVU … 10 different Mountaineers took a shot, including a game-high five from Smith.

Sophomore Mallory Smith and freshman Frances Silva made their first collegiate starts against Miami … sophomore Steph Carpenter earned her first start of the season against FAU, her second career start … Florida Atlantic was the only first-time opponent on WVU’s schedule this season … Smith’s five shot attempts against the Owls are a career-best.

The West Virginia University tennis team continues action on Sept. 24-26, as it travels to West Point, N.Y., for the Army ECAC Invitational.

The Mountaineers concluded their eighth annual Martha Thorn Invitational with two titles and two runner-ups.

WVU freshmen Melis Tanik and Allison Arnold captured the only two titles for the Mountaineers …Tanik conquered the flight ‘C’ singles competition after defeating Duquesne’s Alrissa Tobe, 6-1, 6-2 … Arnold took the title in flight ‘D’ after a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Xavier’s Natalie Handler … junior Veronica Cardenas made it to the flight ‘A’ semi-finals after defeating Youngstown’s Annie Jesko, 6-1, 6-1, but fell short in the finals in a tough 6-1, 6-3 match … freshman Mary Chupa lost the flight ‘B’ title to Duquesne’s Samantha Noble … freshman Anna Rodionova and juniors Kathryn Haught and Catie Wickline placed third in their respective flights … in doubles action, WVU’s No. 1, 2 and 3 doubles pairs made it to the flight ‘A’ semi-finals … the Mountaineers’ No. 4 and 5 doubles pairs made it to the flight ‘B’ semi-final round, but were narrowly defeated by Duquesne (8-6) and MSU (8-5).

The West Virginia University volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 14, as it plays host to in-state rival Marshall at 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum … the match has been designated a “dollar night” with selected concessions available for a dollar … admission is free.

Last Week in Volleyball
The Mountaineers own a 7-3 record after going 2-1 at the Black and Gold Challenge hosted by Wake Forest last weekend … WVU posted wins over East Carolina (3-0) and Campbell (3-0) and fell to the Demon Deacons (0-3).

Notes and Quotes
Junior outside hitter Serinna Russo and senior middle blocker Lauren Evans were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts in play … Russo led the team with 25 kills and 47 digs on the weekend, including a double-double with 11 kills and 19 digs in the win over Campbell … Evans also had a strong showing with 25 kills and .345 hitting clip … setter Kari Post played well with 104 assists and 24 digs, while senior libero Bonnie West recorded 32 digs … West moved to No. 2 on WVU’s all-time digs list … she now has 1,588 career digs and is just 42 digs from moving into the No. 1 spot.
