MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia moved up two spots in the AP poll and one spot in the USA Today/ESPN coaches’ poll released Sunday two days after the Mountaineers’ come-from-behind 24-21 overtime victory over Marshall.
West Virginia sophomore quarterback Geno Smith engineered two length-of-the-field scoring drives over the remaining 8:28, and then hooked up with Jock Sanders in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion try to tie the game with 12 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Tyler Bitancurt’s 20-yard field goal proved to be the deciding score. West Virginia has won all 10 games in the series, while WVU coach Bill Stewart is now 3-0 against the Herd.
West Virginia (2-0) remains outside of conference play to face Maryland this Saturday at noon at Milan Puskar Stadium in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
This is the first time West Virginia and Maryland have hooked up on the gridiron since 2007 when the Mountaineers beat the Terps 31-14 in College Park. Yesterday, Maryland blew out Morgan State 62-3.
A limited number of Maryland tickets remain and can be purchased by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office toll-free at 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
