Women's Tennis: Day One of Martha Thorn

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team finished day one of the Martha Thorn Invitational at the WVU Tennis Courts and the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
In singles action, junior Veronica Cardenas and freshmen Melis Tanik and Allison Arnold will be competing in the finals tomorrow, while freshman Mary Chupa advances to the flight ‘B’ semi-final round after defeating Villanova’s Wesleigh Donadio 6-0, 6-1.
Cardenas began the day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Youngstown State’s Annie Jesko, then advanced to the semi-finals, where she defeated Villanova’s Nelson, 6-1, 6-1. Cardenas will go up against the Vulcan’s Annabel Pieschl in tomorrow’s flight ‘A’ finals.
Tanik and Arnold had successful first appearances as Mountaineers today, as they won their first two matches, earning each of them a spot in the finals. Tanik will compete against Duquesne’s Alrissa Tobe in flight ‘C’, while Arnold faces Xavier’s Natalie Handler for the flight ‘D’ title.
Juniors Kathryn Haught and Catie Wickline, sophomore Emily Mathis and freshman Anna Rodionova also had good showings in the singles competition, but did not make it past the semi-final round.
In doubles competition, the Mountaineers have one flight ‘A’ semi-finalist, while two flight ‘B’ pairs made it to the semi-final round after defeating Morehead State, Xavier and Villanova in their respective matches.
The Martha Thorn Invitational will continue tomorrow at 8 a.m., in which each of the seven teams will compete in the semi-final and final rounds to wrap-up the tournament.
