The Mountaineers (5-3) fell to the Demon Deacons (4-3) in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) match.
“I think this was great match for us because we are going learn a lot from it,” coach Jill Kramer says. “Kari (Post) followed our game plan of distributing the ball to the middle, which is something that we needed to improve upon. Both Laruen (Evans) and Abby (Norman) had a great match tonight. Our team showed a lot of fight against a good Wake Forest team, and I am really proud of them for that.”
Despite the loss, senior libero Bonnie West posted 12 digs which moves her to No. 2 on WVU’s all-time career digs list. The Wildomar, Calif., native now has 1,568 career digs behind Michelle Domas (1,630).
The Demon Deacons started the match strong with a 6-0 run at the beginning of set one. Down 21-12, WVU went on a 9-0 comeback run with Kylie Armbruster posting two hard kills to give the Mountaineers some momentum. However, despite their best efforts, seven kills from Wake Forest’s Kadija Fornah led her team to capture set one.
WVU came back determined in set two as kills from senior Lauren Evans and junior Serinna Russo tied the score at 13. The Mountaineers fought hard in the set, but Wake Forest once again prevailed after a kill from Fornah.
Wake Forest continued to roll in the third set as it posted 13 kills as a team to secure the match.
Senior Abby Norman and Evans led the Mountaineers with 11 kills apiece, while Russo posted 13 digs.
The Mountaineers will complete action at the Black and Gold Challenge tomorrow with matches against East Carolina and Campbell at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
