NORFOLK, Va. - William & Mary used two second-half goals to defeat the West Virginia University men’s soccer team, 2-1, on Friday evening at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium in Norfolk, Va. The game was the first of two for the Mountaineers in the Stihl Soccer Classic.
The Mountaineers finished the match with 11 shots to the Tribe’s seven and had three more corner kicks than William & Mary.
Sophomore Peabo Doue got the Mountaineers off to an early start with his first goal of the season only eight minutes in. Doue took a pass from sophomore Shadow Sebele right outside of the box and launched a ball that William & Mary goalkeeper Andrews McAdams was unable to hang on to.
Freshman Jay Williams had an excellent chance in the final seconds of the first half when he out-ran a Tribe defender down the right side of the field and took a shot that just rolled left of the goal.
Ten minutes into the second half, freshman Allan Flott had a beautiful restart from about 45 yards out, however McAdams was able to punch the ball over the net.
Flott’s chance started a flurry of Mountaineer chances that included three opportunities from Sebele. All three shots came from 18 yards out with the first and third going wide right, while the second hit the left post.
Sebele finished with a game-high, five shots.
William & Mary began to generate offensive pressure and in the 65th minute, Nate Baako launched a shot from the left side that senior goalkeeper Zach Johnson sprawled out for, but was unable to stop to tie the game, 1-1.
The Tribe then took the 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute off a goal from Ryan Snyder. Ben Anderson took a corner kick that Baako headed off the crossbar. Snyder was able to head the rebound into the back of the net to complete the comeback.
The Mountaineers will play the final game of the Stihl Soccer Classic on Sunday, Sept. 12, against host Old Dominion. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
