CORAL GABLES, Fla. - A one-goal lead was not enough as the West Virginia women’s soccer team allowed two goals in final eight minutes, falling 2-1 at Miami, Friday night at the 2010 Hurricane Cup at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla.
UM forward Brittney Steinbruch netted the game-winner in the 88th minute, the second of two goals in a seven-minute span, creating a shot by dribbling up the middle of the field. Steinbruch took several touches towards the 18-yard box, eventually slotting a ball on the ground past WVU goalkeeper Kerri Butler.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute on a bending shot from forward Blake Miller. Midfielder Morgan Betscher used a quick throw-in to find Miller on the right flank, who turned and fired a shot that curved inside the near post from 20 yards out.
Miami tied the match at 1-1 in the 83rd minute on a header by midfielder Ashlee Burt. Ali Brennan earned an assist after serving the free kick into the heart of the box following a Mountaineer foul along the left sideline.
Trailing 2-1, the Mountaineers held strong to the final horn. A West Virginia player was found offsides with 10 seconds to play as defender Mallory Smith found the back of the net to take away the apparent equalizer.
Miami, who was called for 16 fouls on the night and one yellow card, managed to outshoot West Virginia, 17-13, on several long range attempts. The Hurricanes also held a 5-4 corner kick edge.
In the 61st minute, Miami midfielder Fatima Nasser fired a shot from 20-yards out, finding the left post for the near scoring chance.
West Virginia held an 8-6 shot advantage after one half of play. Miller and Betscher combined for five of the Mountaineers’ eight first half shots.
The Mountaineer defense was stout for most of the night, forcing Miami to take long range shots. UM’s lone scoring chance in the first half came in the fourth minute when WVU's Butler came strong off her line to deny a shot by Miami’s Jordan Roseboro on a thru ball just inside the box.
Miller had WVU’s best scoring chance of the opening stanza, set up by forward Frances Silva in the 23rd minute. Silva chased a ball down in the left corner, beat one defender and found Miller at the top of the 18-yard box. Miller’s one-timer forced UM goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo to make a save to her right.
WVU moves to 2-3 on the season while Miami improves to 4-2-1.
The Mountaineers resume play in the Hurricane Cup on Sunday morning against Florida Atlantic. Kickoff at Cobb Stadium is slated for 11:30 a.m.
