COLUMBUS, OHIO – Ohio State’s Lauren Granberg scored back-to-back goals in the 52nd and 53rd minutes to eliminate a 1-0 West Virginia lead, lifting the Buckeyes to a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
Granberg’s first goal came on a ball over the top of the Mountaineer back line for a one-on-one situation. She then scored the go-ahead goal on a thru ball from midfielder Lauren Steuer. Granberg was able to slot both balls past WVU goalkeeper Kerri Butler.
The Buckeyes added a goal in the 73rd minute off a corner kick as forward Caitlyn Martin pushed her way through two Mountaineer defenders in the box and headed a ball into the back of the net.
Midfielder Bri Rodriguez put the Mountaineers on the board with a goal in the 37th minute. Rodriguez turned one defender around and sent a blast from 20 yards out, over OSU goalkeeper Rachel Middleman, which tucked perfectly inside the left corner. The goal was the second of the season for Rodriguez.
WVU managed only two shots in the first 36 minutes of the second half, its best chance coming off the head of Erica Henderson at the 64:46 mark. Forward Emily Dillon was fouled on the right corner of the box, setting up a free kick where Henderson’s shot went wide of the left post.
After a slow start by both teams to open the contest, WVU midfielder Caroline Szwed took the first shot of the match in the 10th minute on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was blocked by a Buckeye defender.
The Mountaineer offense generated back-to-back corner kicks in the 15th minute, the second leading to a header sent wide of the goal off the head of defender Henderson.
Ohio State had two scoring looks in the first half, the first coming in the 19th minute in transition with midfielder Danica Wu sending a ball over the crossbar from 25 yards out. With nearly five minutes to play, forward Paige Maxwell’s one-touch off a cross sailed wide of the left post.
Ohio State held a 13-9 shot advantage to improve to 2-1-1 on the season while West Virginia drops to 1-2-0.
The Mountaineers return to action with a home contest against Central Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m.
