MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team defeated Robert Morris in exhibition action by a score of 3-0 on Wednesday evening in front of 515 fans at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
“We made improvements in some areas and I thought we regressed in some others,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “I said to the guys yesterday that we need to make the fixes, but not sacrifice something else. We did well, but as a coach we’re always looking to get better.”
Junior defender Uzi Tayou was able to net the Mountaineers first goal of the evening only eight minutes into the match. Senior Alex Silva started the play after a Robert Morris foul with a pass to junior Franck Tayou, who took one dribble before laying out a beautiful cross to Uzi Tayou who was able to finish with one touch.
The insurance goal was scored by sophomore Peabo Doue in the 55th minute on a shot from the penalty kick area after a cross from sophomore Shadow Sebele into the middle of the field. Franck Tayou was able to corral Sebele’s deflected cross and played the ball right to Doue. The assist was Franck Tayou’s second of the evening.
“It’s good to see other guys get on the score sheet, but quite honestly I thought Peabo Doue was fantastic all night long,” LeBlanc said. “We’ve seen the development and maturation of him from last year to this year and I think he was the guy that made it click for us.”
Sophomore defender Eric Schoenle added the final goal of the evening in the 84th minute off a corner kick from sophomore Travis Pittman. Schoenle was able to beat his defender on the set piece and headed Pittman’s corner kick right into far post to seal the victory for the Mountaineers.
Senior Zach Johnson played all 90 minutes between the posts and recorded two saves. Johnson also saw a penalty kick in the 88th minute by Robert Morris’ Tyler Solis, which flew high over the net.
The Mountaineers finished the game outshooting the Colonials, 18-5 and took 12 corners to Robert Morris’ two. 20 players were able to see action in the game with Sebele recording a game-high four shots.
WVU officially opens the 2010 campaign with the Save Face WVU Classic presented by Jerseys Subs on Sept. 3 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium with No. 9 Monmouth at 7:30 p.m. The team then returns to action on Sept. 5 against No. 17 UNC Wilmington at 3:30 p.m., also at home.
