The Paul Hornung Award was designed to recognize versatile, high-level performers in major college football. The Watch List is comprised of 48 players and is based on 2009 statistics and expectations heading into the 2010 season. The list is continually updated during the season based on the performance of its players.
All 11 conferences that comprise the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) are represented in this year’s list, with 25 seniors, 18 juniors and five sophomores being nominated. A selection committee will narrow down the field to approximately 10-15 finalists at the end of the regular season in December, and the winner will be selected near the end of the bowl season in January.
“Paul Hornung was a playmaker and the spirit of the Paul Hornung Award is to recognize versatile, high-level performers who make an impact on the game,” said Karl Schmitt, executive director of the Louisville Sports Commission. “The Watch List is a work in progress, and we are particularly pleased from the outset to draw attention to almost two dozen individuals that have not received recognition with other awards.”
Selected as a second-team all-BIG EAST performer by Phil Steele, Sanders played in all 13 games during his junior year, and started 10. He posted a career high in receptions with 72 and ranked No. 2 in the BIG EAST in receptions per game, and No. 7 for receiving yards per game. He also ranked No. 3 in punt return average and No. 12 in all-purpose yardage.
The Mountaineers open their season on Saturday, Sept. 4, when they play host to Coastal Carolina at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
