MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s soccer team dropped its final exhibition match of the preseason, falling 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
“Today was another step in preparing this team for the start of the season,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We again saw some areas where we need to improve before Friday’s season opener.”
After a strong first half of play from the Mountaineers, the Demon Deacons scored a pair of goals in the 63rd minute to steal the momentum. Wake took a 1-0 lead off the foot of forward Katie Stengel who received a through ball up the middle of the WVU defense. Midfielder Bianca D'Agostino quickly added to Wake’s lead with a successful penalty kick try.
The Mountaineers’ best scoring chance came in the 36th minute off a header from defender Erica Henderson. Midfielder Bri Rodriguez sent a corner kick towards the back post where Henderson’s shot was deflected over the crossbar by Wake goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe.
WVU goalkeeper Kerri Butler and defender Bry McCarthy gave solid outings in helping WVU to a scoreless first half. Butler stopped a penalty kick try to preserve the shutout through 45 minutes.
West Virginia had second half scoring opportunities from forwards Megan Mischler and Katie Lenz that fell short.
The Mountaineers open the 2010 season at home on Friday, Aug. 20, against Penn State. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. The match is “Poster Night” as fans can pick up a free 2010 WVU women’s soccer schedule poster and the contest has also been designated a “Dollar Day” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas available for purchase for just one dollar.
