MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Former Mountaineer forward Devin Ebanks has signed a non-guaranteed rookie contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, the team announced today.
Ebanks, drafted 43rd overall, will make the rookie minimum $473,604 if he makes the team, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Ebanks averaged 11.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 69 career games at West Virginia. During summer league play in June, Ebanks averaged 15 points and started all five games for the Lakers.
"Just because you played well in summer league doesn't mean you're going to make it at the NBA level," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak told the Times. "But if you can't play well in summer league, that's an indication you can't play at the NBA level. That much we know. So we try to get the kids to come to camp and evaluate them there."
Ebanks said on his twitter site that he will wear No. 3, the same number he wore in college.
Ebanks is one of two West Virginia players taken in this year's draft; forward Da'Sean Butler was selected by the Miami Heat. They are the second and third players drafted at West Virginia under fourth-year coach Bob Huggins.
