MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer coach Marlon LeBlanc announced today the addition of Matt Drake, a 6-foot-2 transfer from Oregon State.
"I am very pleased to add Matt Drake to our recruiting class," LeBlanc says. “This class is deep, and Matt's addition makes this group even better.
"He had some good experience at Oregon State and will certainly add maturity and leadership to our young group. Matt is a very technical and versatile player. He has the ability to play a number of different places for us on the field because of his athleticism and commitment. We are excited to welcome Matt to the Mountaineer family."
A two-year letterwinner for the Beavers, Drake competed at Oregon State in 2008 and 2009. The Happy Valley, Ore., native played in 13 matches, recording one goal and one assist. Drake, a four-year letterman at Clackamas High, earned first team all-league accolades and honorable mention all-state status.
Drake joins a recruiting class that consists of Amaugo “Yannick” Iwunze (Paris, France), Zachary Claudio (Charleston, W.Va.), Brooks Nucilli (Fairmont, W.Va.), Travis Ives (Bridgewater, N.J.), Jay Williams (Raleigh, N.C.), Allan Flott (Arlington, Va.), junior college transfers, brothers Franck Tayou (Douala, Cameroon) and Uzi Tayou (Bandjoun, Cameroon), and Julio Arjona (Germantown, Md.), who enrolled at WVU in January.
The Mountaineers open the season at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium with the WVU NIKE Classic, facing 2009 NCAA Tournament team Monmouth on Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
