MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s combined varsity athletic teams have an Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 968 according to data released today by the NCAA.
The APR is based upon eligibility and retention of student-athletes over a four-year period. The NCAA uses the APR as an assessment of real-time academic success.
WVU’s average APR score of 968 is up four points from last year’s average and up 12 points from two years ago. WVU’s score of 968 is higher than the NCAA’s overall four-year APR average score of 967.
For the 2008-09 academic year, West Virginia had four teams with perfect 1,000 scores: men’s basketball, cross country, gymnastics and rifle.
“Once again, I am pleased that our APR scores continue to climb each year as our overall average is four points higher than last year and 12 points higher than two years ago,” says Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong. “Our average is higher than the national average, and our teams continue to make good academic progress as evidenced by more than 400 student-athletes being named to the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll.
“I want to congratulate the cross country team for its perfect four-year score as well as our other teams that received a perfect score in 2008-09.”
Any student-athlete receiving athletic aid in a varsity sport can earn up to four points per year for being academically eligible and remaining enrolled in the institution. A team’s APR is the total points earned on the roster divided by that squad’s total possible points, multiplied by 1,000. Penalties for teams falling below the specified mark may include the loss of scholarships up to a cap of 10% of the team’s total NCAA scholarship aid available. Loss of aid will generally be in one-year increments to those sports.
An APR score of 925 or higher is what teams first look to meet to avoid immediate penalties (involving the possible loss of grants-in-aid). The current four-year APR scores for WVU’s varsity teams (2005-06 to 2008-09): baseball 934; men’s basketball 990; women’s basketball 951; cross country 1,000; football 952; gymnastics 991; rifle 991; rowing 915; men’s soccer 917; women’s soccer 997; men’s swimming 951; women’s swimming 970; tennis 979; indoor track 990; outdoor track 990; volleyball 979; and wrestling 957.
Sixteen of WVU’s 17 athletic teams will not receive scholarship reductions. In 2010-11, rowing will be granted 18.83 out of a maximum 20.00 in athletic scholarships. The rest of the 16 teams exceeded or met the 925 score or did not have any circumstances that warranted an immediate penalty.
