MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rising senior Andy Lamson has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The men’s at-large second team honor is the first for the business and economics major with a 3.96 grade point average (G.P.A.); he was previously named to the third team last season. Lamson, a native of Colchester, Vt., was the lone student-athlete representative for the sport of rifle.
Lamson is the third Mountaineer honored by CoSIDA this season, as rising senior Liz Repella was named to the women’s basketball first team, and graduate Reed Williams to the football second team.
“This is a big achievement for Andy and I’m happy he was able to move up to the second team,” coach Jon Hammond says. “He works hard to do well in the range and in the classroom. Our squad likes to focus on team achievements throughout the season, but it’s always nice for a student-athlete to receive an individual honor at the end of the year.”
“This second award is definitely an honor and I’m happy I was able to move up to the second team,” Lamson says. “I’m going to continue to work hard in all areas and hopefully move up to the first team next season.”
A three-time honoree on the College Rifle Coaches Association’s all-Academic Team, Lamson also is a two-time Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Scholar-Athlete.
A five-time National Rifle Association All-American, Lamson helped lead the undefeated Mountaineers to the 2009-10 GARC regular season and conference championship titles, as well as a third-place showing at the 2010 NCAA Championship. Among his individual accomplishments as a junior were a seventh-place finish in smallbore (674.9) at the GARC Championship and a 12th-place finish (587) in air rifle at the national championship.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.3 on a scale of 4.0, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, II and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
