Track: Five Mountaineers Compete at NCAAs

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Five members of the West Virginia University track and field team are set to compete at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., on June 9-12.
Seniors Clara Grandt, Keri Bland, Marie-Louise Asselin, Karly Hamric and junior Katelyn Williams will represent the Mountaineers, marking the most student-athletes WVU has ever sent to the outdoor championships.
Competition will begin on Wednesday, as Williams squares up for the high jump at 7:45 p.m., ET. The first WVU high jumper to qualify for the national championship since Alethea Moody earned All-America status in 1990, Williams qualified for the finals after clearing 5-10’ on her second attempt at the East Regionals in Greensboro, N.C.

Also competing on Wednesday is Grandt. A West Union, W.Va., native, she is set to run the 10,000-meter race at 10:15 p.m., after taking first-place at regionals with a time of 34:29.86.
On Thursday, Bland and Hamric will run in the 1,500-meter semifinals at 8 p.m. If either qualifies for the finals, they will then run on Saturday at 1:18 p.m. The duo qualified for NCAAs after finishing in first and second in their heat, respectively. Bland crossed the line with a time of 4:18.92, while Hamric followed with a time of 4:18.98.
Asselin will run in the finals of the 5,000-meter run on Friday at 10:40 p.m. At regionals, Asselin qualified with an excellent showing after crossing the line with a time of 16:20.43 to win the second heat and finish sixth overall. At the 2010 indoor championships, Asselin earned All-America honors after finishing second in the 5k.
