Baseball: Gyorko Named Second-Team All-American

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Jedd Gyorko has been named a Louisville Slugger second-team All-American, announced today by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
The standout shortstop from Morgantown had another productive season for the Mountaineers. As a junior, he raised his power numbers by setting career-highs with 19 home runs, .750 slugging percentage and 177 total bases. He batted .381 with 57 RBIs, tied a school record with 28 doubles for the second consecutive year and garnered a .472 on-base percentage.

Gyorko also finished his junior campaign with a 43/24 walk-to-strikeout ratio, and shows a 92/75 ratio over his three-year career. He is WVU’s all-time leader in batting average (.404), doubles (73), extra-base hits (113) and is tied for first-place with former Mountaineer Tim McCabe with 35 home runs.
Entering the season, Gyorko was WVU’s first multiple All-American after earning accolades in his freshman and sophomore years. He is now a three-time All-American and has earned Louisville Slugger second-team honors for the second consecutive year. He was also recognized by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper as a freshman All-American.
Currently, Gyorko is seventh nationally in doubles, 11th in total bases, 12th in doubles per game (0.49), 21st in slugging percentage, 23rd in runs scored and 29th in home runs. He committed just eight errors in 296 chances this season, equaling a .973 fielding percentage.
Gyorko joins five other BIG EAST players who were named either second or third-team All-Americans. St. John’s freshman Jeremy Baltz also made the second team, Louisville’s Thomas Royse, Neil Holland and Phil Wunderlich took third-team honors and BIG EAST Player of the Year Joe Leonard of Pitt also was named to the third team.
Left-handed pitcher Chris Sale of Florida Gulf Coast was named the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year.
