MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University standout shortstop Jedd Gyorko was named a first-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and earned second-team All-America honors by Baseball America, announced today.
The state native leaves his alma mater with first-team honors for the first time in his three-year career. He was named to the Pro-Line Athletic NCBWA All-America second team following his freshman and sophomore seasons.
Gyorko, who was recently drafted by the San Diego Padres and is slated to begin in their minor league system as early as this week, earns his first All-America honor from Baseball America and now holds five end-of-season national accolades following his junior season.
The Morgantown native is currently a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award, was named the District II Player of the Year by the NCBWA and was also named a Louisville Slugger second-team All-American.
Gyorko already became the first Mountaineer to earn All-America accolades in multiple seasons in 2009, and has been recognized nationally in all three years at WVU. He is the school’s career leader in four offensive categories, including batting average, doubles, extra-base hits and is tied for first-place in home runs.
Gyorko becomes the third Mountaineer in school history to earn first-team All-America honors, joining former players Chris Enochs (1997) and Bill Marovic (1964).
