Sean Cleary’s women’s track program had a banner year in 2010, placing 10th in indoor nationals and now 16th yesterday at outdoor nationals. Both finishes are the highest in school history.
A total of 11 All-America citations were awarded this year (seven during the indoor season and four during outdoor season) and Chelsea Carrier (fourth indoor pentathlon), Marie-Louise Asselin (second indoor 5,000), Clara Grandt (fourth outdoor 10,000) and Karly Hamric (sixth outdoor 1,500) set program bests in their individual events.

Track’s performance at outdoor nationals should give West Virginia another boost in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings. The Mountaineers are presently 25th after the spring sports season.

And then there's his son, Andrew, Stanford QB, who'll be the first pick of the draft, whenever he comes out.

“In ’81 I redshirted and I can remember the coaches having a conversation, ‘Hey, if he throws one pass we lose this game,’” laughed Jones.
That turned out to be pretty accurate. Daniels tried only six passes and completed one – to West Virginia. But the Mountaineers had just 152 yards of offense in a 17-0 defeat to the Panthers.
“If someone knows how to run the ball against Pitt, I wish he’d write me a letter,” Don Nehlen said after the game.
Speaking of Nehlen, he knew right away he was inheriting a pretty good quarterback in Luck as soon as he first turned on the projector and began watching film of his new football team.
“I could tell that Oliver Luck had command of the team,” Nehlen said. “He showed just on film he was in charge so I kind of thought we were going to have a pretty solid quarterback.
“I’d always been a believer that you can hide a lot of guys in football, but you can’t hide the quarterback.”
Nehlen had two great ones to start his WVU career – Oliver Luck and then Jeff Hostetler.
“When Jeff transferred here that was a big coup because at that time our recruiting … we could advertise some scholarships in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and we wouldn’t have gotten any takers,” Nehlen said.
In a touch of irony, Rockefeller is the great grandson of John D. Rockefeller and it was Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company that gave rise to the anti-trust movement in the United States the late 1890s.

If Memphis has no takers and Conference USA gets sick of its constant posturing, let’s look at some other leagues for the Tigers:
1. The League of Nations – Formed in 1919 in Versailles, France, the League of Nations (the precursor to today’s United Nations) was the first super conference with 58 members. The United States, however, took the Notre Dame route and chose to remain an independent.
2. The Far Right Leagues – Formed in France in the late 19th century, the Far Right Leagues were popular in the 1920s and 1930s and actually got something done by causing riots that eventually overthrew the center-left coalition government.
3. The Justice League - Also called the Justice League of America, the Justice League was formed in early 1960s to help Earth fight off the Appelaxians, not to be confused with the Appalachians. The original Justice League consisted of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman (who looks a lot like Sarah Palin), Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter. Later expansion included the Green Arrow, Atom, Hawkman, Black Canary, Captain Marvel, Zantanna, Plastic Man and several others.
4. The Human League – Formed in Sheffield, England in 1977, the Human League consisted of Philip Oakley, Joanne Catherall, Susan Ann Sulley and various sidemen. The Human League’s No. 1 hit “Don’t You Want Me” fits perfectly with Memphis’ current BCS marketing campaign.
5. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea – OK, so it’s not really a league but if it was, Captain Nemo would have been one heck of a commissioner.
6. Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon – Again, not really a league, plus the Peruvian-Brazilian border lacks adequate facilities or much room for growth.
Mike had a zest for life and a wicked sense of humor. When he found out I had all of The Jerky Boys CDs, Mike began calling me Frank Rizzo, out-of-work painter Mike Derucki, effeminate dancer Jack Tors or Jocco Johnson, the guy who wanted his ex-wife’s house demolished.
Eventually, Mike would simply say “Hey chisel chest!” whenever he saw me.
I still laugh when I think about that.
