MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Jedd Gyorko has been named a quarterfinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, announced today by the College Baseball Foundation. The award, sponsored by Mizuno, is given annually to the nation’s top shortstop.
The revised list features 25 of the nation’s finest shortstops. Gyorko is batting .359 with 14 home runs, 47 RBIs, 18 doubles and 128 total bases. He is second on the list of candidates in home runs.
“These players have recorded some very impressive statistics,” said Kevin Dunagan, Wallace Award co-chair. “They started the season strong and have continued to build on that success.”
The Morgantown native’s 128 total bases rank 25th nationally, and he is 44th in doubles, 48th in home runs per game (.32) and 50th in home runs.
Gyorko also boasts a .967 fielding percentage, committing just eight errors this season. Offensively, he has 20 multiple-hit games and nine multiple-RBI games. He has started all 155 games of his career.
The Wallace Award will be presented on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Awards Show. The revised watch list features shortstops from 15 conferences, with the ACC, Big 12 and SEC leading the pack with three representatives each.
