MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Clara Grandt has been named West Virginia University student-athlete of the week for her efforts in leading the Mountaineers to a fourth-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The West Union, W.Va., native broke a stadium record in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 33.31.80, as she raced her way to a first-place finish.
The Mountaineers finished fourth in the meet with 68 points. Louisville took first for the third-straight season with 108 points, while Connecticut finished second (101), Georgetown place third (86) and Villanova rounded out the top five (67.50).
This Week in Baseball: The West Virginia University baseball team has one three-game series this weekend as it faces BIG EAST opponent Notre Dame beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 8, at 2 p.m. at Hawley Field … game two will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one … Sunday’s contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia went 1-3 overall … it began the week with a 16-6 victory over Duquesne at home … WVU followed its win with three straight losses at Cincinnati over the weekend.
Notes and Quotes: In WVU’s mid-week victory against the Dukes, it set a season-high at home for runs scored (16) and base hits (20) … junior Justin McDavid owns a 20-game hitting streak that began on April 1 against Connecticut … the Queen Creek, Ariz., native is batting .299 with 40 RBIs in 38 games played … WVU does not have any mid-week games this week due to final exams … redshirt junior Grant Buckner batted .533 last week (8-for-15) with one home run, four RBIs, three doubles and four runs scored … Buckner is currently on an 11-game hitting streak … Jeremy Gum led the team with two home runs in WVU’s four games last week.
This Week in Track & Field: WVU is idle this week … the Mountaineers will return to action on Monday, May 10, at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet in Swarthmore, Pa.

Notes and Quotes: Senior Clara Grandt started competition by winning the conference title in the 10,000-meter race on Saturday … the West Union, W.Va., native broke a stadium record in the process as she crossed the line with a time of 33:31.80 … junior Katelyn Williams also had a strong showing as she finished eighth in the heptathlon with 4,639 total points … the Chesterland, Ohio, native placed eighth (15.61) in the 100-meter hurdles, seventh (10.83 meters) in the shot put, third (1.76 meters) in the high jump, eighth (26.62) in the 200-meter dash, 10th (4.92 meters) in the long jump, 10th (22.64 meters) in the javelin and fifth (2:26.00) in the 800-meter run … sophomore Meghan Mock scored points for the Mountaineers with a fourth-place showing (5.89 meters) in the long jump, while junior Brittany Fink finished in 17th place in the discus after throwing 40.25 meters … on Sunday, the Mountaineers swept competition in the 5,000-meter race, as senior Marie-Louise Asselin finished first (16:31.04) and sophomores Kate Harrison and Sarah-Anne Brault finished in second (16:45.79) and third (16:48.99), respectively … senior Karly Hamric led the team in the finals of the 1,500-meter race as she captured first place after crossing the line with a time of 4:28.02 … junior Jessica O’Connell also ran well, finishing in seventh (4:31.00), while Kaylyn Christopher finished in 10th (4:33.69) … the 4x800 relay team of Keri Bland, Hamric, O’Connell and Christopher also had an excellent showing as they broke the school record with a fourth-place finish after crossing the line with a time of 8:47.95 … Bland then placed second in the finals of the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:06.79 … in the high jump, freshman Sydney Cummings made her conference championships debut tying for seventh place with teammate junior Katelyn Williams … the duo jumped 1.70 meters for the finish, while Natasha Redman placed 14th (1.65 meters), junior Terina Miller placed 19th in the hammer throw after throwing 45.41 meters.
This Week in Rowing: WVU’s spring season is complete.
Last Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers traveled to Camden County, N.J., to compete in the ECAC Regatta as their last race of the 2009-10 season.
Notes and Quotes: The Novice 8+ boat of Brittany Doss, Jordan Burns, Megan Neckelmann, Sarah Dungan, Ashley Dolan, Hilary Meale, Katherine Leljedal, Devin Milsop, and coxswain Ellen Shular, had the best performance of the day by earning the bronze medal in the Grand Finals with a time of 7:18.6 … the Varsity 8+ boat took second in the Petite Finals with a time of 6:54.13, behind Colgate (6:49.83) and ahead of George Washington (7:01.12), Villanova (7:01.48) and Duquesne (7:52.57) … the Second Varsity 8+ boat also finished with a second-place finish in the Petite Finals with a time of 7:16.13, behind Delaware (7:06.03) … the Varsity 4+ team ‘A’ boat took fifth in the Grand Finals with a time of 8:06.19, while the team ‘B’ boat took third in the Third Level Finals.
