MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Clara Grandt led the West Virginia track and field team today with a first-place showing in the 10,000-meter race at the 2010 NCAA East Regionals in Greensboro, N.C.
The West Union, W.Va., native took first place and qualified for nationals with a time of 34:29.86.
“It was a big day for West Virginia track,” coach Sean Cleary says. “Clara Grandt ran a very steady race today. The weather was not conducive for running, yet she handled the heat with great poise. I was very happy with Clara’s ability to change gears off of such a lethargic pace. She appears very well for the finals in Eugene.”
The Mountaineers also had a good showing in the 1,500-meter race as Karly Hamric, Keri Bland and Jessica O’Connell all qualified for the semifinals.
Hamric finished in fourth place with a time of 4:21.31, while Bland followed in fifth (4:21.61) and O’Connell finished in ninth (4:22.20).
The semifinal round for the 1,500 meter is set for 6:45 p.m. on Saturday.
Junior Katelyn Williams also qualified for the finals in the high jump, as she cleared 1.78-meters for 11th place.
“Today we had the first high jumper to qualify for nationals since I have been affiliated with WVU,” Cleary says. “Katelyn was clutch today. It was not surprising, but it was surely the highlight of her career.”
WVU will complete regional action on Saturday with the 1,500 meter at 6:45 p.m., followed by the preliminary round of the 5,000-meter race at 8:45 p.m.
