Gyorko was the only Mountaineer to receive an all-BIG EAST honor, marking the third straight season he has been recognized by the conference. The Morgantown native earned first-team honors for the second consecutive year, and received a second-team selection in his freshman campaign in 2008.
Gyorko becomes the first WVU player to earn multiple first-team conference honors since former Mountaineer Justin Jenkins was twice named to the all-BIG EAST first team in 2006 and 2007. He joins former standouts Lee Fritz and Jenkins as the only three-time all-BIG EAST selections in school history.
Picked as the conference preseason player of the year, Gyorko has merited his accolades with another strong season. He leads the offensive-oriented BIG EAST with 165 total bases, is tied for first place with 26 doubles, sits at second place with a .724 slugging percentage and 86 base hits and is third with 69 runs scored and 42 walks.
For the season, he is batting .377 with a career-high 17 home runs and 53 RBIs. Gyorko has a 2:1 walk-to-strikeout ratio, and was recently named a Brooks Wallace Award quarterfinalist by the College Baseball Foundation.
