Baseball: Mountaineers' Late Rally Falls Short

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia’s Mark Dvoroznak grounded out to second with two outs and the tying run on third base to end the Mountaineer rally, as WVU fell 5-4 to Villanova, in the first of a three-game BIG EAST Conference baseball series at Hawley Field, tonight, in front of 392 in attendance.
Down 5-1, WVU’s Justin McDavid hit a two-out single up the middle to start the ninth-inning rally. Jeremy Gum singled to right field and pinch hitter Matt Frazer singled up the middle to load the bases. Kevin Griffin walked to plate McDavid and Colin Durborow singled up the middle to drive in Gum and Frazer to pull within one.
Villanova starting pitcher Brian Streilein (6-3) pitched 8.2 innings, giving up four runs, including three earned on nine hits, walking two and striking out eight. He retired 13 of 15 batters before giving up the two-out single to McDavid. Kevin Crimmel earned his second save of the season, replacing Streilein for the final out of the game.
Villanova (29-21, 9-16 BIG EAST) scored five runs on seven hits and committed one error, while West Virginia (25-28, 8-17 BIG EAST) scored four runs on nine hits and committed one error.
Matt Szczur led the Wildcats with two hits and three RBIs, Dain Hall finished with two hits and an RBI and Marlon Calbi also recorded a pair of hits. McDavid led WVU with two hits and Durborow plated a pair of runs.
Jarryd Summers (2-9) took the loss for the Mountaineers, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and walking three.
The Wildcats took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning on Szczur’s fourth homer of the season to left center field.
Jedd Gyorko tied the game in the bottom of the first when he reached on a leadoff double to right field and scored when Dom Hayes reached on a fielding error by Wildcat second baseman Tyler Sciacca.
Szczur hit a bases-loaded single through the left side, giving Villanova a 3-1 lead in the third inning.
Hall’s one-out double to left center scored two more Wildcat runs in the fourth inning, increasing their lead to 5-1.
West Virginia and Villanova return to action at Hawley Field on Friday, May 21, at 7:05 p.m.
