MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Grant Buckner has been named to the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup, announced today by the organization.
The Elkview native has now earned four national awards this week for his outstanding performance in last weekend’s three-game sweep over conference foe Notre Dame. Bucker was recognized as one of eight Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week on Monday, was awarded the Pro-Line Athletic National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Tuesday and earned the CollegeBaseballInsider.com National Player of the Week honor on Wednesday.
Buckner’s nationally-renowned performance was highlighted by his three home-run, 10-RBI game in WVU’s 22-6 rout over the Fighting Irish in game one of last Saturday’s doubleheader. He finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game two, and capped the weekend by going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBIs.
The third baseman’s 10-RBI effort is a single-game high nationally, tying Delaware’s Ryan Cuneo for the most RBIs in one contest this season. Buckner’s three home runs trail only the single-game highs of four set by Jake Magner of North Dakota and Brian Baudinet of Massachusetts.
An RBI double in the second inning of last night’s 6-5 victory over Bethune-Cookman extended Buckner’s hitting streak to 15 games.
Buckner is the second Mountaineer this season to be named to the National-All Star Lineup, joining junior Jedd Gyorko. The College Baseball Foundation has recognized WVU baseball in three consecutive seasons, as Tyler Kuhn was honored in 2008 as well as Vince Belnome in 2009.
