MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team defeated Duquesne today, in a 6-1 match on its home courts.
WVU improved to 14-5 in the regular season and held its record of 4-1 in the BIG EAST, while Duquesne fell to 7-10.
"I was impressed with our conditioning today, as well as how we handled adversity,” says coach Marc Walters.
The Mountaineers started the day by sweeping the doubles competition. Senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt junior Monique Burton clinched the doubles point, in their last home match as a team, with an 8-5 victory over the Duke’s No. 1 pair of Samantha Noble and Rachel McGowan.
“It was a big day for the seniors,” adds Walters. “It was great to see the seniors, especially Steph, have such a great effort in their last match on our home courts."
Also contributing to the doubles point was No. 2 pair of sophomore Veronica Cardenas and freshman Emily Mathis, along with No. 3 pair of junior Ashley Pilsbury and freshman Liv Pettersson.
WVU continued the lead as it captured five of the six matches in the singles competition. LaFortune won in the No. 1 spot with a score of 4-6, 7-6(3), 2-0, before her opponent retired in the third set. Burton clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over McGowan in the No. 2 spot.
Cardenas, Pilsbury and sophomore Kathryn Haught also contributed to the victory by capturing wins in the No. 3, 5 and 6 spots, securing the 6-1 triumph for the Mountaineers.
