MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team finished the 2009-10 season ranked No. 16 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll released last night. WVU was ranked 10th in the final Associated Press Poll released prior to the NCAA tournament on March 15.
The ranking marks the third time in school history that the Mountaineers have completed a season ranked in the final top 25 poll. The 1991-92 team finished the year 14th while the 2007-08 team finished that season 17th.
The Mountaineers (29-6, 13-3) advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the third time in the last four years, after defeating Lamar 58-43 in first round action in Austin, Texas, on March 21. WVU has reached the postseason in four-straight seasons, a school record.
West Virginia set numerous records this past season, highlighted by the most wins ever in school history (29), its highest BIG EAST finish (2nd) and the most conference wins since joining the league in 1995-96 (13).
