MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team plays host to a pair of matches this weekend at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers play conference foe Pitt in the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational on Saturday, April 10, at 11 a.m., and will face Akron at 5 p.m.
Saturday’s contests, open and free to the public, are the fourth and fifth of the spring exhibition season for WVU. The 60-minute match against the Panthers and 90-minute match against the Zips are the second part of WVU’s efforts to raise funds for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. On March 6, the team competed in the “Three’s a Team…the Fourth’s a Mountaineer” all-day event at the Caperton Indoor Facility. The annual 4-versus-4 tournament was held to raise funds for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
“We are excited about the competition that Pitt and Akron bring this weekend. At the same time, we know there is a bigger cause behind the matches,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “It’s a great opportunity for fans to come out and watch some quality soccer while raising awareness for breast cancer.”
Over the past six years, the WVU women’s soccer team has raised more than $48,000 to help fight breast cancer.
WVU’s spring season will conclude on April 25 with a match at Ohio State. The Mountaineers return the bulk of their roster from a year ago, losing only three starters from the 2009 team that made a 10th-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.
