MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team concludes its season on Saturday, May 1, at the ECAC Regatta in Camden County, N.J. on Cooper River.
WVU will be competing in four events against 12 BIG EAST and non-conference teams including Rutgers, Villanova, Bucknell and Navy.
“We'll certainly try to improve upon our race performances relative to the BIG EAST schools we raced just a week ago, as well as some of the schools that competed with us at the Knecht Cup Regatta three weeks ago,” says coach Jimmy King.
The Mountaineers will begin racing at 8:45 a.m. in the second heat of the Novice 8+ event, followed by the Varsity 4+ team ‘A’ and ‘B’ boats, which will be competing in the second heat at 9:15 a.m. WVU will have two additional boats competing this weekend, one which will be in the first heat of the Varsity 8+ race at 9:45 a.m., along with the second Varsity 8+ boat in the second heat at 10 a.m.
The finals for each event will be held from 12-2 p.m., and each boat will compete in the Grand, Petite or Third Level Final for its respective races.
“We have seven seniors competing in their final races as Mountaineers this weekend,” adds King. “Individually and collectively, they have contributed greatly to our program over the years and as such prominent members of our team, there is certainly a significance beyond the norm to this weekend's racing for all of us.”
The graduating seniors will be Varsity 8+ competitors Kimberly Benda, Caroline Rettig, Brett Krumholz and Amanda Mahasky, along with second Varsity 8+ member Stephanie Roof and Varsity 4+ contributors Brittany Brooks, Kaitlyn Brownson and Kensie Phillips.
Benda and Rettig had a memorable end to their season as they were honored last week as first and second-team all-BIG EAST selections.
