MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong today announced the schedule for the upcoming 2010 women’s soccer season.
“Our 2010 schedule promises to provide another promising year for West Virginia women’s soccer,” says Pastilong. “Nikki Izzo-Brown played the nation’s ninth-toughest schedule a year ago and this year’s slate is similar in challenge.”
Eight opponents on this year’s slate appeared in the 2009 NCAA tournament – Central Michigan, Connecticut, Marquette, Ohio State, Penn State, St. John’s, Villanova and Virginia.
“We are very excited to be playing such a competitive schedule," says coach Izzo-Brown, who returns the bulk of her team from last season. “Our team will be challenged early in the season and as it progresses with some tough BIG EAST competition. The home schedule at Dick Dlesk also features some great matchups against top programs like Penn State, Virginia and Connecticut.”
West Virginia will play nine matches this fall at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium and will take to the road for nine contests. WVU opens up the 2010 campaign at home against Penn State on Friday, Aug. 20.
Awaiting the Mountaineers in the early season are a pair of road trips beginning with Bowling Green and Ohio State on Aug. 27-29. WVU will also compete in Miami, Fla., at the Hurricane Cup on Sept. 10-12 versus Miami and Florida Atlantic.
The Mountaineers open the month of September against Central Michigan in a Saturday night home contest on Sept. 4. WVU opens conference play against Pitt on Thursday, Sept. 16, in Morgantown.
West Virginia plays host to ACC foe Virginia on Sept. 19, and BIG EAST foe USF on Sept. 26. The regular season ends with four consecutive home matches against Villanova, Georgetown, Connecticut and Providence.
Early October conference road trips to Cincinnati, Louisville, Syracuse and St. John’s round out the fall schedule.
The 2010 BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship begins on campus sites with first round action set for Thursday, Oct. 28, and quarterfinal action on Sunday, Oct. 31. Rutgers will play host to the BIG EAST semifinals and finals on Nov. 5-7.
Here is the complete 2010 schedule.
