MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two rowers were recognized for all-BIG EAST honors after the completion of the conference championship on Sunday, April 25, in Worcester, Mass.
Senior Kimberly Benda was recognized as an all-BIG East first-team selection, while senior Caroline Rettig was honored as a second-team selection.
Both athletes competed with the Varsity 8+ boat at the championship, where they assisted in defeating BIG EAST foe Villanova in a head-to-head battle.
“Caroline and Kim are great Mountaineers to receive this inaugural recognition for their individual and team efforts toward bettering our program,” says coach Jimmy King.
Benda has been a member of the Varsity 8+ and the Varsity 4+ boats since her freshman year and has contributed to several top three finishes for both boats.
The Comox, British Columbia, native is going on her second year as the team captain and has won multiple awards for her outstanding perseverance to her sport and in the classroom.
Rettig, who is currently the co-captain for the Mountaineers, is also a member of the Varsity 8+ and the Varsity 4+ boats. The Cincinnati, Ohio native is a thriving student and was honored last season as the team’s Iron Mountaineer for her dedication in the weight room.
"This is the first year that all-conference teams have been awarded for our sport in the BIG EAST,” adds King. “These two have certainly earned this acknowledgment."
