MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team concluded their season today at the BIG EAST Championship after the consolation matches were canceled due to inclement weather.
“The girls were pretty disappointed because this was going to be a big match for us,” says coach Marc Walters. “We were really looking forward to getting a chance to win another match here, but we understand that the matches had to be canceled.”
The Mountaineers concluded their season with an overall record of 16-6 and finished 6-2 in BIG EAST competition. WVU added another win to its record during the first round of the championship when it defeated No. 9 seed Cincinnati, 4-2.
“I’m proud of each one of the girls and the effort that they put in this season,” adds Walters. “They showed that they’re making progress and can be a legitimate BIG EAST contender.”
Seniors Stephanie LaFortune and Gabriela Blaskovicova will be leaving the squad this year after four successful years as a Mountaineer student-athlete.
“We did extremely well, but we don’t want to rest on this,” concludes Walters.”We want to continue competing like this every year and just keep improving our record. This season was definitely a success and I’m looking forward to what we will do next season.”
