MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team fell to Notre Dame, today, in a 4-0 match in the second round of the BIG EAST Championship.
“Notre Dame is going for a national title and they played up to their reputation today,” says coach Marc Walters. “I was pleased with our effort and we did our best the entire match.”
The Fighting Irish swept all matches and clinched the win with a point in the No. 5 spot, in which junior Ashley Pilsbury was defeated by Notre Dame’s Kali Krisik, 6-0, 6-0. The Mountaineers’ doubles pair of senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt Monique Burton put up a tough fight in the No. 1 spot, but fell 8-2 to Notre Dame’s Shannon Matthews and Cosmina Ciobanu.
“We will regroup after today’s match and be back tomorrow to play for a top six finish,” concludes Walters.
The Mountaineers will continue action with a noon match on Saturday, April 24, as they advance to the consolation round of the championship.
