MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team fell to Rutgers, today, in a 6-1 match in Newark, N.J.
The Mountaineers finished their regular season with a record of 16-6 overall and 6-2 in BIG EAST competition.
“We played better than what the results showed, but they deserved the victory,” says coach Marc Walters. “We just gave them too much of lead and we couldn’t overcome it.”
The Scarlet Knights began the match by sweeping the doubles competition and continued the lead in the singles competition, where the Mountaineers dropped five of six matches.
Sophomore Kathryn Haught captured the lone win for the Mountaineers in the No. 5 spot with a 1-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5, victory over Rutgers’ Leonora Slatnick.
The Mountaineers will continue action April 22-25, as they wrap-up their season with a trip to South Bend, Ind. to compete in the BIG EAST Championships.
