MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia women’s soccer team dropped a pair of 60-minute matches Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va. The Mountaineers fell 2-1 to Virginia Tech and 1-0 to Wake Forest.
“We had a lot of opportunities today,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown who tinkered with lineups in both matches because of various injuries. “And you need to capitalize on those chances against good teams. We didn’t do that today. We have some work to do before our last spring game at Ohio State.”
The lone West Virginia goal came off the foot of Megan Mischler midway through the second half against Virginia Tech. The speedy forward intercepted a pass played back to the Hokie goalkeeper at the top of the 18-yard box. Mischler took the ball and slotted it into the empty net.
After a scoreless first half, the Hokies found the back of the net off a cross from the left flank. A Tech forward slid between a pair of Mountaineer defenders and sent a ball into the back of the net.
Virginia Tech scored a second goal off another WVU miscue, this time off a mis-clear by a West Virginia defender in front of the net. Tech’s forward was there for an easy finish from eight-yards out.
The Mountaineers made several runs forward and had numbers in the box on several occasions but came up empty.
WVU played well against the Demon Deacons, a physical game played strongly in the middle of the field.
Wake’s game-winning goal came on a one-touch finish in front of net on a play started down left side of the field.
Both matches were moved to a turf field as the grass fields were unplayable.
WVU’s spring season concludes on April 25 with a match at Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
