MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A total of 427 West Virginia University student-athletes were recognized for their achievement in the classroom, Thursday evening, at the annual Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll Banquet.
Implemented in 1989 by WVU Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong, the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, more than 3,500 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll.
“It’s very important to acknowledge the work of all the academic support staff involved in helping the student-athletes to juggle their classes, assignments, training and travel,” says Garrett Ford, associate athletic director for student services. “The Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll has grown in part, not only because of the work ethic of the student-athletes, but also the efforts of our staff.”
“Time moves very quickly in athletics, and it is important to take the time to recognize student-athletes for their dedication and commitment to their studies,” says Dr. Paul Downey, educational counselor for student-athletes.
Student-athletes from all 17 sports teams, in addition to cheerleading and athletic training, gathered at Waterfront Place Hotel for dinner and acknowledgment of their academic achievements. WVU alum Stan Hostler addressed the student-athletes, encouraging them to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them.
