MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Jedd Gyorko has been named to the National All-Star Lineup for his performance last week, announced today by the College Baseball Foundation.
Gyorko, a Morgantown native, went 10-for-25 with five home runs, nine RBIs, four doubles and 11 runs scored in five games last week. He produced a career-high six RBIs against Maryland on April 7, scored a career-high five runs against St. John’s on April 11, posted two four-hit games and also had two multiple home run games.
Gyorko was also named to the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week Team, announced last Monday by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. He continued his hot streak by going 2-for-4 with an RBI, a double and a triple against Eastern Kentucky in WVU’s 13-11 victory at the Mountaineer Diamond Classic on Tuesday.
The College Baseball Foundation has recognized WVU baseball in its weekly honor for the third consecutive season. In 2008, former Mountaineer Tyler Kuhn was named to the National All-Star Lineup after going 16-for-31 with five home runs, 18 RBIs, 14 runs scored, three doubles and two triples.
Last season, Vince Belnome was honored after going 6-for-6 with two home runs, nine RBIs and four runs scored in WVU’s 18-3 rout of Cincinnati on May 10. Belnome’s six hits mark a single-game school record, while his nine runs driven in tie both Bill Biddle (5/9/1947) and Angelo Onder (5/23/1936) for first on the single-game list.
Gyorko is one of 14 players honored this week. He is batting .363 and leads the Mountaineers in home runs (11), RBIs (34), total bases (100), doubles (16) and slugging percentage (.741).
