MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women's tennis team defeated BIG EAST foe Seton Hall today, in a 6-1 match in South Orange, N.J.
WVU improved its record to 15-5 in the regular season, as its BIG EAST record also increased to 5-1. Seton Hall fell to 5-10 overall.
"We have had a terrific season coming off of a tough year in 2009," says coach Marc Walters, "so seeing us dominate teams that we struggled with last year is a good sign that we are making progress."
The Mountaineers started off the day by sweeping the doubles competition with two 8-4 victories in the No. 1 and 3 spots, along with an impressive 8-1 win by No. 2 pair of sophomore Veronica Cardenas and freshman Emily Mathis.
Seton Hall came back to make the score 1-1 after capturing a singles victory in the No. 1 spot as senior Stephanie LaFortune lost in a tough third-set tiebreaker against the Pirates' Liebshner.
WVU took the lead again as it battled to win the last five matches in the No. 2-6 spots, losing only two sets all day. Mathis, Cardenas, redshirt junior Monique Burton, junior Ashley Pilsbury and sophomore Kathryn Haught contributed to the day's victory with wins in the singles competition.
"Now our girls have some momentum going into next weekend," says coach Marc Walters. "We are looking forward to taking a good shot at Rutgers and 'Nova to finish strong and improve our BIG EAST seeding."
The Mountaineers will continue competition April 16-17 as they travel to compete against BIG EAST foes Villanova on Friday and Rutgers on Saturday.
